“I’ve been building my business for years. It’s been tough lately, but I refuse to give up.” One of my clients was reflecting on some of the recent challenges in his business. His confidence had been rocked, but he still had a strong commitment to his work and to the success of the business.
In our conversations, he started questioning his effectiveness. He had thoughts like these running through his head:
“Maybe people don’t understand exactly what we do.”
“Maybe I should work harder at helping them get it.”
“Maybe I should advertise, promote more, brand the business better.”
Maybe none of the above.
The problem was the focus was on trying to make himself be seen, heard or understood.
Instead we talked about radically shifting his focus to the prospect or client.
When you feel like giving up, don’t worry about yourself so much. Focus more intensely on “them.”
Become more committed to understanding their needs and problems. Demonstrate interest in them.
Ask questions. Listen a lot.
People want to be heard and understood.
Sounds like a basic principle, but it’s one that’s easy to forget.
Giving up means giving up on your potential to serve your market and make the difference you can and want to make.
People need your products or services. By refusing to give up, you can reinvigorate your commitment to serving the people in your market.
Remind yourself of why you got into the business in the first place. Rekindle your initial enthusiasm.
Giving up is not an option.
When you feel like giving up, rev up by recommitting yourself to those you serve.
