Strategy versus Tactics

Where is your business heading now? Where do you want it to go?

.

Maybe it’s time to revisit your strategy. Strategy and tactics are both essential components of business success. If you’re thinking about the direction for your business, first make sure you’re clear about strategy  – the “what” it is you want to accomplish in the big picture. Then focus on tactics. Tactics represent the “how” you want to achieve your objectives.

.

Even some of the most experienced leaders are tempted to follow the tactics trail prematurely. They end up mired in disconnected details and action plans that don’t accomplish the ultimate objectives. They’ve been “doing” a lot, and confusing their activity with productivity.

.

As a leader, be a strategy sparkplug. One of your roles as a leader is to keep the strategy in the forefront, and to strengthen the strategic thinking capability of the leadership in your organization. Identify when you or others start down the tactics trail too quickly and provide the perspective needed to shift to strategy when needed.
