Moving Targets

Are your goals shifting? If you’re like most of the executives I work with, you’re trying to keep up with the constantly changing business environment. You might be asking,"How can we hit a moving target?"

It seems as soon as strategies are defined, they need to be changed. What was critical last week is no longer important this week. Whether you’re running a large company or your own small business, you must be clear about the overall purpose and direction of your business.

It requires taking a regular look at the design of your organization, business or practice to make sure it still aligns with the key success factors for the business. Then make changes as necessary. Employers want leaders who can adapt well to change and who can help others do the same.

How would you answer the following questions?

    * Does the design of your company, department or firm still align with key success factors?

    * If you had to design your business from scratch, how  would you create it? How would it differ from the current design?

    * Who else in your business needs to be involved in answering these questions or making recommendations?

Constantly evaluating and aligning your business is only one key area to examine — one best practice to implement. Take a look at your business frequently from different angles. Be disciplined. You’ll gain a stronger sense of control…while the changes continue.

Change can be a bumpy ride and an opportunity to strengthen your own leadership. Don’t let moving targets threaten your success.

NOTE: The latest issue of my WorkMatters print newsletter addresses six other key areas that leaders need to examine. If you have not already received a copy and you’d like me to send you one by regular mail, simply send me an email with your physical mailing address. ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

There is certain relief in change, even though it be from bad to worse! As I have often found in traveling in a stagecoach, that it is often a comfort to shift one’s position, and be bruised in a new place.
