Are You a Team Player?

If you’re like most people, you’d probably answer,”Yes.” But how do you really know? People have different views of what being a “team player” means.

I worked with one client who considered himself a strong team player, despite the team’s differing opinion. He was the fountain of knowledge, a true expert in his field. “I’m a team player because I share what I know.”

Although his brilliance was evident, the way in which he delivered it landed flat. When sharing information with team members, he made them feel inferior. He spoke down to them.

Team members perceived him as trying to build his ego as opposed to building the team.

Once he became aware of how others perceived him, he was able to make adjustments, and improve relations with other team members.

What are your thoughts about what makes a great team player?
Hold that kind of discussion with your own team.
