What You Should Be Doing

"We're doing now what we should have been doing all along…diversifying our market, paying closer attention to our best customers, and being more proactive about securing new business." My client made this comment recently as we discussed the state of his business in the current economy.

Many leaders, managers, executives and business owners are asking themselves,"What should we be doing now?"

What are you doing? It's easy to get caught up in "the work,"yet you never feel like you're caught up with your work. There's always more to do.

The better question is, "How are you leading?"… especially now.

So you can't pull out your crystal ball to predict the future, but you can lead most effectively by concentrating on the future you want to create. Keep that vision in front of those you lead.

Communicate whatever you do know about current conditions, whether the information is positive or negative. Studies show that people rather know bad news than not know anything. Don't keep them in
suspense. They want to know a diagnosis. They want to know decisions that have been made, plans in the works. People don't like ambiguity.

Determine what it is that you really should be doing as a leader…and do it!

 * What have you been talking about doing for some time, but have not acted on?

 * How can you minimize the chances of being stuck in "the work" and maximize the opportunity to shine as a leader?

 * What are your choices?

P.S. Stay tuned for upcoming announcements about useful leadership resources I've developed to help you do what you really need to do, now and throughout the year.
