What Decision Do You Need to Make?

WorkMatters Tips Issue #62    January 20, 2009

Like most leaders, you're forced to make tough decisions…especially in today's times.

While a number of structured decision making models exist, often leaders must make important decisions on the spot under tremendous pressure. Decision making models go out the window, and your gut takes over.

When you're faced with making tough decisions, you need the following:

  • Courage
Making a difficult decision is a courageous act. Acknowledge and address any fears that might be standing in your way. Override the fear by making a statement like this: "While I am concerned about _________, what's more important is _________."

  • Clarity
Clarify the criteria that will apply as you make your decision. Boost the quality of your thinking now…before you're forced to make tough decisions. Agree on the basis upon which key decisions will be made. What are the most most important questions you will ask to help you make the best decisions? Create your own decision making checklist which acts like a filter for your thought process.

  • Conviction
Decide. Don't put off a decision you know you need to make. It could come back to bite you. Indecisiveness drains your brain and your energy.

When I see executives struggle to make a decision, it's often because they lack enough information. Of course there are some decisions that require extensive data analysis, research, etc. But don't run the risk of analysis paralysis. Find out what you ultimately need to know, then choose the best alternative.

As Elbert Hubbard said, “The greatest mistake you can make in life is to be continually fearing you will make one.”

Decision making is an inevitable part of leadership. How will you make your best decisions? Review your process now to avoid decision making dilemmas down the road.
