Re-Energize Your Leadership

How would you rate your personal level of energy as a leader? If you’re like many leaders I know, you fluctuate between being fired up and being burned out.

Wherever you fall on the scale, decide what you can do to keep yourself motivated and on track to achieve your objectives.

Need a few ideas?

  * Identify one specific short-term goal you would be excited  to accomplish. It should be a "want to do" not a "have to do" goal. It can be something simple like making a new networking contact, volunteering, attending an industry event or just cleaning up your office. Imagine how you would feel if you accomplished it. Make a commitment.

  * Connect with a peer or leader from a different industry. Go to lunch. Share ideas. Get fresh perspective.

  * Shake things up.
  If you’re stuck in meeting patterns or habits that drain you, do something different. Meet in a different location. Change the meeting format. Challenge your team to do something new.

  * Learn something new.
  Even the most experienced managers can benefit by learning something new. Take a class. Build your knowledge or skill. Read that book you bought last year, but never opened. Study whatever interests you. Doing so will open new opportunities for you.

For a more radical idea, consider writing a belief statement. I read one belief statement recently from a leader who documented a few thoughts about what he believed about himself, his success in business, his role as a leader, etc. It was quite inspiring.

You may be surprised at what you really need to say in your own voice.

Anything goes. No right or wrong. The statement should only have meaning to you. Revisiting your beliefs can be a powerful motivator…a way to recharge your own leadership battery.

P.S. If you’d like to share your own belief statement with me, I’d be interested in seeing it. Feel free to contact me at:

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.
