In your role, expectations are high. People trust you to make wise decisions.
Unfortunately many of those decisions may be difficult. Some decisions may test your nerves and patience. Some may even test your values, principles or beliefs.
Who can you promote without making the rest of the team mad? Or who do you need to let go of? What budget must you cut? What change do you need to implement?
Should the business relocate? How will you address unethical behavior? What new business opportunity will you pursue? Should you move in a new direction?
What Kinds of Decisions are Most Difficult for You?
As a leader, you can’t afford to put off some decisions. I see leaders struggle when they feel pressure to make the “right decision.”
Don’t think in terms of right and wrong. Think “best decision.” Talk your decision through with other trusted advisors or peers. Trust your capability to make the best decision, even under difficult circumstances.
Here are a couple of areas to pay attention to when it comes to decision making.
- Criteria: List the criteria that are most important to consider before you’re under pressure. This allows you to create a kind of filter to run your decision through. Make sure those standards are reflected in your decision making process.
- Yourself: Know yourself well enough to determine when you’re not in the right state of mind to make important decisions. Fear, anger and other emotions can distort your perception. Check your ego as well.
Get a clear view of the situation. Remind yourself about what's most important.
Don’t dwell. Decide.
PS – Share these tips with anyone you know who may be stuck in indecisiveness or charged with making a difficult decision.
