Building Leadership Resilience

With the uncertainty of the markets, people are nervous. Maybe you are yourself. Hardly a day goes by without reporting dismal news about the economy.

Just as exercise helps you build physical strength and resilience, so can exercising your leadership muscle build resilience for yourself and your organization.

Here are some ways to build leadership resilience:

 * Focus on opportunity.
Even though there are problems or challenges in your business, keep opportunities in the forefront. Talk about them regularly. Help your team identify emerging  opportunities of any kind. Develop plans to capitalize on those that appear most promising. Staying focused on opportunities allows you to handle setbacks more easily.

 * Speak with conviction.
When employees see you waiver or doubt yourself, they lose confidence. Show your confidence by  speaking with conviction. Don’t be arrogant or threatening.Use statements like “We can do this.” or “We will achieve our goal.” Avoid statements like, “We hope we will be successful.”

 * Show confidence in others.
Remind the team of the strengths you see in them. Emphasize the unique capabilities they can contribute. The fact that you acknowledge those capabilities will go a long way. Showing confidence in those you lead helps them build self confidence.

 * Stretch your team.
Encourage people to step out of their comfort zones. Today’s times call for new approaches, innovative thinking and quick changes. Employees must demonstrate exceptional responsiveness and flexibility. Help people stay light on their feet. Don’t let them be complacent or shift into autopilot.

In times of change, challenge or crisis, employees will take their cue from you as the leader. You’ll be stretched yourself, but you will spring back with the right attitude, skills and support.Building resilience helps you build the business.

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort. ~Herm Albright
