Business Strategy & Summer
With summer here, it’s tempting to be a bit sluggish in the business. No doubt you’ll have some opportunity to get away on a family or personal vacation and leave your work worries behind.
The reality is that while many executives try to escape their business at some point during the summer, their work tends to find them wherever they may be. This doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing. And the purpose of this post is not to suggest a right or wrong way to go about spending your vacation time.
I’ve always advocated figuring out what works best for you. Getting away can help put your business and life in a different perspective. If you feel compelled to contemplate your business, I encourage you to think about your strategy — the ultimate direction of your business.
Here are some ways to think more strategically this summer (or anytime):
* Think big picture. Possible destinations. Don’t worry about the details for now.
* Determine what you want to change. What do you want to be different, better in your business?
* Contemplate new possibilities. Think "what if?" If you tried something new (e.g.,pursuing a new market, offering a new service, acquiring a new business), what would happen?
* Let the ideas flow. Don’t judge them. They’ll be time for that later.
* Share your thinking. Upon your return from your vacation, holiday, a trip or whenever you’re ready, share your ideas about strategy with someone else. You’ll be more likely to implement them.
Summer and strategy can go together well. Good leaders are good strategic thinkers. Don’t let your whole summer slide by without some focus on your business strategy.
PS: If you’re interested in assessing your personal midyear goals and getting clear about what you want to accomplish by the end of this year, read my latest blog post which includes a Midyear Goals Assessment for Leaders:
