Make Your Work Matter!

People need to know their work matters, especially in tough times. Leaders are no exception.

If you’re a leader, here are a few tips to help you make your own work matter. Apply them to yourself as a leader, or share them with others who need to hear them.

 * Believe in your own value first.
 You must believe in yourself first before others will.  Never doubt what you can do. Even some of the most accomplished leaders question their value from time to time.

 * Be a catalyst.
 Even if you don't always know how to solve the problem, engage your team. Spark fresh ideas. Encourage new approaches. Prompt action. Keep things moving.

 * Seek out the like-minded.
 Associate with other people who share your interests, goals, motivation, values, etc. They'll give you good ideas, support and feedback when needed. Connect with other leaders like yourself — those in similar roles or facing similar challenges.

 * Find your soapbox.
 Express what you care about most, in your industry or in your work. Commit to making a difference in a big way. Your voice needs to be heard. Be bold.

 * Play to your strengths.
 Stop doing work that doesn’t leverage your strengths. Or determine new ways you can use the strengths you enjoy to create best results. You’ll make a stronger impact.

 * Entertain new possibilities.
 If you feel yourself falling into a slump, it may be temporary, or you might need to open new opportunities for yourself within or outside your organization.

 * Power your own sense of purpose.
 To energize your work, reflect on WHY you want to do what you want to do, not just the "what you want to accomplish" part. Answer any of these questions that apply:

Why did you start or join the business/firm/organization?
Why do you continue in your leadership role in the organization?
Why do you care?
Why do you want to lead?

Commit to making your work matter in any business climate. That's what the best leaders do.
